The red drum is one of the largest members of the drum family. In the Chesapeake Bay, red drum range from juveniles, known as “puppy drum”, to large adults that can weight 50 pounds or more. The red drum is similar in appearance to croaker and black drum. In addition to their copper coloration, red drum can be distinguished from their relatives by one or more large, dark spots which are located on or near their tail.
