Alison Prost, Maryland Executive Director of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF), recently issued this statement following the announcement of new funding to CBF for environmental initiatives through the Chesapeake Bay Stewardship Fund:
“The grants to CBF will benefit farmers who want a long-term, practical solution to both profitable farming, and to reducing agricultural pollution. Ultimately, we all will benefit from cleaner water. This is an investment that will pay off in greater abundance. That means small farm prosperity, plentiful oysters, crabs and fish in the Chesapeake Bay, and job creation.
“Farmers are waiting in long lines for this type of help. If Congress reduces such funding in the Farm Bill this fall the line will grow far longer. We all will lose if that happens. Cleaner farms mean a cleaner environment downstream for our children.
“All Maryland farmers will be eligible for some portion of the grant money. Farmers in western Maryland will get special assistance through funds targeting farms in the Potomac River headwaters, as well as the Shenandoah headwaters.
“We are grateful to U.S. Senator Ben Cardin, (D-MD) Chairman of the Senate Water and Wildlife Subcommittee, for his help, and to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and to all the agencies and private companies that contributed to the Stewardship Fund. We also are thankful to the Chesapeake Bay Program and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) for all the work they do each year with the Fund. “
