2009 James River Sojourn

The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay is hosting the 2009 James River Sojourn. The Alliance is a regional non-profit organization that builds and fosters partnerships to protect and restore the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers.

The 2009 James River Sojourn is a five-day paddling expedition for families, outdoor enthusiasts and everyone interested in Virginia waterways. Special evening programs will focus on the history surrounding the James River, current land use issues as they affect the river, current water quality issues, and how individuals can become stewards of this important resource.

Traveling by river is a unique and powerful way to see the beauty of Virginia’s piedmont landscape, and while it will be both recreational and rejuvenating, the journey is an excellent way to renew a commitment to protection of our natural resources.

Evening programs are free and open to the public. This year we are expanding this educational watershed experience to disadvantaged youth by providing sponsorships to underserved youth and their adult sponsors in the Big Brothers, Big Sisters of the Central Blue Ridge program.

The Alliance is working with partner organizations and agencies, including Va DCR, Va DEQ, Chesapeake Bay Foundation, James River State Park System, Nelson County Cooperative Extension, and Virginia Water Resources Research Center. This event is partially funded by BamaWorks, Honeywell, and American Electric Power River Operations.

The event runs from Friday, July 10 through Tuesday, July 14. Participants can register for one or more days of the journey.

A Kick-off cookout and campfire will be held at James River State Park on the evening of July 10. Paddling starts at the park on July 11. Camping will be along the river near Wingina, Howardsville, and Scottsville.
