The City of Norfolk Virginia will receive up to $200,000 in Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grant funding to improve Harbor Park, Newton’s Creek watershed, and Fort Norfolk areas.
Norfolk is one of 19 cities nationwide and the only city in Virginia to receive a grant as part of the EPA’s Brownfields Area-Wide Planning Program.
Revitalization of the Harbor Park area is part of the City’s larger Coastal Adaptation and Community Transformation Plan, which includes a Harbor Park Promenade and Nature Trail, and restoration of the historic Newton’s Creek bed to help prevent flooding and to provide a new open space corridor for area residents.
EPA Brownfields Area-Wide Planning (AWP) grants help communities research, plan, and develop implementation strategies for an area affected by one or more brownfields.
The EPA Brownfields Program is designed to empower states, communities, and other stakeholders in economic redevelopment to work together in a timely manner to prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields.
EPA defines brownfield as “a property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant”. EPA estimates that there are more than 450,000 brownfields in the U.S.
