According to U.S. Coast Guard 5th District, Chesapeake Bay mariners could face a number of challenges as a result of Hurricane Sandy.
Although the immediate threat of strong winds and rain has passed, there are still a lot of hazards people can encounter on and near the water.
The Chesapeake Bay and especially major rivers are expected to contain debris that can cause major damage. In addition, buoys and other navigation aids may be missing or in different locations following a major storm.
“There will still be real dangers on the water for the next several days,” said Capt. Kathy Moore, the captain of the port of Philadelphia. “We strongly urge people not to let their guard down and to avoid getting out on the water until it is safe to do so.”
